Hawai'i beckoned, but the islands had a nasty reputation for luring newcomers only to cast them adrift on a treacherous sea of hight prices, low wages, and scarce jobs - so Polancy brought her own business. She collected all her savings, cashed in her IRAs, and purchased a franchise for Homes & Land real estate magazines, which she established on Maui and Kauai.

Along the way, Hawaii was full of surprises - both jolts and joys. There was a lot to learn about life, friendships, business and survival on tiny islands in the middle of an ocean. Tourist brochures and travel books did not tell the story. And very little truthful, practical information on day-to-day life was available in a concise form.
